Brief
The project addressed a lack of access to practical first aid training for disadvantaged middle-school students. Existing online first aid training was largely passive and ineffective, particularly for younger learners. Blend was asked to create an engaging eLearning solution that reinforced practical skills and sustained attention on a challenging topic.
Discovery & Analysis
Needs analysis and expert interviews showed that learners had already received basic classroom instruction but lacked opportunities to practice and retain first aid decision-making. The core learning objective was clear: enable students to apply basic first aid to an unresponsive person. Key learning goals included: checking for consciousness and breathing, knowing when and how to contact emergency services, communicating critical information, applying the recovery position, and knowing what to do while waiting for help.
Design & Development
Given lower attention spans at this age, strong visuals and active decision-making were essential. Blend designed a comic-book-style, gamified experience using branching scenarios and multiple endings. A character-based narrator (a robot butler) guided learners through realistic situations, increasing engagement and motivation.
The experience was built using Articulate Storyline and Adobe Creative Suite.
Evaluation
Learner behaviour was tracked through LMS data, including scoring, engagement, and question-level performance.

• Multiple endings encouraged repeat attempts to achieve mastery
• 91% of learners reported improved understanding due to the interactive format
• Repeated play reinforced learning objectives and ensured skill retention.
